When to Apply for Business Internships, by Major

When to Apply for Business Internships, by Major: Freshman and sophomore year; The summer before junior year; Junior fall

The most common way business students miss good internships is applying too late. Different fields recruit on very different calendars: investment banking can open more than a year before the summer, while many marketing and startup roles are posted only weeks before they start.

These are typical patterns. Firms set their own dates, and they shift a little every year, so check each firm's own deadline once you have a shortlist.

Accounting

  1. Freshman–sophomore year
Big Four and regional firms run sophomore leadership and discovery programs, with applications from late summer into the fall. Go to Meet the Firms and Beta Alpha Psi events.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Oct)
The main recruiting window, for internships the following winter (busy season) or summer. Most offers go to students the firms met at fall events.
  3. Junior winter or summer
The internship itself. Strong interns usually receive a full-time offer before senior year begins.
  4. From day one
Plan the 150 credit hours the CPA requires — it shapes your course load, not just your final year.

Finance

  1. Freshman–sophomore year
Early-insight, diversity and sophomore programs at banks and investment firms. Some deadlines fall in the autumn of sophomore year or earlier.
  2. Sophomore spring–summer
Applications for junior-summer investment banking and markets roles can open more than a year ahead. Network before they open, not after.
  3. Junior fall
Remaining junior-summer roles — corporate finance, asset management, commercial banking and smaller banks — plus interviews.
  4. Junior summer
The summer analyst internship. Return offers from it fill most full-time analyst classes.

Business Analytics

  1. Sophomore year
Build SQL, Excel and Tableau skills and one portfolio project. Apply to sophomore programs at consulting and technology firms.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Nov)
Main recruiting at large companies, consultancies and banks.
  3. Junior spring
Mid-size companies and startups hire for the summer on a rolling basis.
  4. Junior summer
The internship; return offers are common in analytics roles.

Marketing

  1. Sophomore year
Build a portfolio: run social media for a campus group and earn the free HubSpot and Google certificates.
  2. Junior fall (Sep–Nov)
Large consumer-goods brand management programs and agencies with structured internships recruit early.
  3. Junior spring (Jan–Apr)
Most agencies, startups and mid-size companies hire — often only weeks before the start date.
  4. Keep going
Marketing hires later than finance, so keep applying through the spring.

Management

  1. Sophomore year
Lead something on campus — managers are hired for evidence they have led people.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Oct)
Rotational and leadership-development programs, and consulting firms, recruit.
  3. Junior spring
Operations and general business internships at mid-size companies.
  4. Senior fall
Full-time rotational programs open, often to their own former interns first.

Supply Chain & Operations

  1. Sophomore year
Join the ASCM or APICS student chapter, and ask the career center about co-op programs.
  2. Junior fall (Sep–Oct)
Manufacturers, retailers and logistics companies recruit at fall career fairs.
  3. About six months ahead
Co-ops for fall or spring terms recruit roughly half a year before they start.
  4. Junior spring
Remaining summer roles at mid-size firms.

Human Resources

  3. Junior spring
Most HR, recruiting and people-operations internships at mid-size companies.
  4. Any time
The aPHR needs no experience and can be taken before you graduate.

Management Information Systems

  1. Sophomore year
Sophomore programs at consulting firms and Big Four technology practices. Earn a cloud or Salesforce credential.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Oct)
Technology consulting, Big Four risk and technology advisory, and IT rotational programs recruit.
  3. Junior spring
Company IT departments and startups hire on a rolling basis.
  4. Junior summer
The internship; return offers are common in consulting.

Plan study abroad and keep a language going; both are screened for.
  2. Junior fall
Multinational rotational programs and global consulting firms recruit.

Insurers and brokers recruit at fall career fairs and the Gamma Iota Sigma conference.
  3. Junior spring
Remaining underwriting, claims and risk internships.
  4. Junior summer
The internship; insurers convert a large share of interns to full-time.

Hospitality & Tourism Management

  1. Sophomore year
Hotel and restaurant operations experience counts — even part-time.
  2. Junior fall (Sep–Dec)
Management-training and leadership programs at the large hotel groups recruit.
  3. Spring (Feb–Apr)
Most hotels, resorts, event companies and tourism operators hire for the summer season.
  4. Seasonal roles
These fill quickly — apply as soon as they are posted.

Real Estate

  1. Sophomore year
Learn real estate modeling in Excel; it is the test at most internships.
  2. Sophomore spring–junior fall
Real estate private equity and investment banking follow the early finance timeline.
  3. Junior fall
Brokerages, REITs and large developers recruit.
  4. Junior spring
Smaller developers, property managers and brokerages hire on a rolling basis.

A simple plan that works for any major

  1. Freshman and sophomore year: look for early-insight and sophomore programs, and build one or two skills employers ask for.
  2. The summer before junior year: make a list of target employers and note when each one recruits.
  3. Junior fall: apply to the structured programs that recruit early.
  4. Junior spring: keep applying — many mid-size companies and startups hire now.

Questions students ask

When should I apply for a summer internship?

For finance, accounting and large corporate programs, apply in the fall of the year before, sometimes earlier. For marketing, startups and smaller companies, applications often open in the spring.

Is it too late to apply for summer internships in March?

No. Many mid-size companies, startups and nonprofits hire in March and April. The structured programs at large firms will likely be closed, so focus on employers that hire on a rolling basis.

How early do investment banking internships recruit?

Often more than a year ahead, with some applications opening in the spring of sophomore year for the summer after junior year.
