How to get a business analytics internship

How to get a business analytics internship: Build one project from public data that answers a real business question, and be ready to explain your method in two minutes; Get comfortable writing SQL joins and aggregations by hand; Practice explaining a chart to someone with no data background

Analytics employers hire on proof: a query you wrote, a dashboard you built, a question you answered with data. A small portfolio does more than a long list of courses.

1. Know when business analytics internships recruit

  1. Sophomore year
Build SQL, Excel and Tableau skills and one portfolio project. Apply to sophomore programs at consulting and technology firms.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Nov)
Main recruiting at large companies, consultancies and banks.
  3. Junior spring
Mid-size companies and startups hire for the summer on a rolling basis.
  4. Junior summer
The internship; return offers are common in analytics roles.
Typical timing — employers set their own dates, so check each one.

2. Build the skills employers check

  • SQL
  • Excel
  • Power BI or Tableau
  • Python or R basics
  • Statistics
  • Explaining findings to non-technical people

3. Take certifications in the right order

None is required, but each shows a skill. Start at the top: the first ones need no background.

  1. Generative AI for Everyone — DeepLearning.AI · Coursera. · about 6 hours
  2. Excel training paths — Microsoft Learn. Free · about 8 hours
  3. Intro to SQL — Kaggle Learn. Free · about 3 hours
  4. Advanced SQL — Kaggle Learn. Free · about 4 hours
  5. Python — Kaggle Learn. Free · about 5 hours

4. Aim at the right roles

  • Data or business analyst intern — Pulls and cleans data, then builds reports that answer business questions.
  • Business intelligence intern — Builds dashboards in tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Analytics consulting intern — Supports client projects with data analysis and presentations.
  • Marketing or pricing analytics intern — Measures campaigns, customer behavior or pricing decisions.

5. Use the words recruiters look for

Put the ones that are true for you on your resume, in your own sentences.

6. Practice the interview

Tips for business analytics internships

  1. Build one project from public data that answers a real business question, and be ready to explain your method in two minutes.
  2. Get comfortable writing SQL joins and aggregations by hand; many analyst interviews include a short live exercise.
  3. Practice explaining a chart to someone with no data background. Translating results is half of an analyst’s job.
