When business analytics recruits

Business analytics internships ask for proof that you can turn data into a decision. Certifications are unusually useful here because they come with projects: a finished dashboard or SQL case study is something you can link on your resume and walk through in an interview. The list below favors free and low-cost options with hands-on work over theory-only courses.
How to choose
- Learn SQL and a spreadsheet tool first — they appear in almost every analytics posting.
- Add one visualization tool, such as Tableau or Power BI, and build one dashboard with public data.
- Kaggle Learn and Google's data analytics courses are free or low-cost ways to get structured practice.
- Save your best project on GitHub or a portfolio page so recruiters can see the work, not just the certificate.

- Data Analysis with Python — freeCodeCamp. Free: Free, including the certificate. Five projects that end in a free, verifiable certificate — and a portfolio to show for it.
- Google Analytics Certification — Google Skillshop. Free: Free. GA4 setup, reporting, and attribution. The exam is free and renews annually.
- Intro to Machine Learning — Kaggle Learn. Free: Free. Decision trees and validation in three hours. Enough to follow what the data scientists are talking about.
- J.P. Morgan job simulations — Forage. Free: Free. Investment Banking and Quantitative Research are the usual pair for a finance or analytics track.

- CompTIA Data+ — CompTIA. Paid: Exam ~$250+; academic pricing is available through many schools. A vendor-neutral data analytics credential, recognised by employers that do not use one particular tool.
- DP-900: Azure Data Fundamentals — Microsoft. Paid: Training free; exam ~$99, with student discounts. Relational, non-relational and analytics data on Azure. A cheap named credential for analytics and MIS majors.
- Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate — Google · Coursera. Paid: Coursera subscription, ~$49/month; financial aid available. The step after Google Data Analytics: Python, statistics and regression models.
- Google Business Intelligence Professional Certificate — Google · Coursera. Paid: Coursera subscription, ~$49/month; financial aid available. Dashboards, data models and pipelines — what a BI analyst builds all week.
- IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate — IBM · Coursera. Paid: Coursera subscription, ~$49/month; financial aid available. Excel, SQL, Python and Cognos in one track. A good alternative to the Google certificate.
- MOS: Excel Associate (MO-210) — Microsoft / Certiport. Paid: Exam ~$100; often free or discounted through a campus testing center. A verifiable Excel credential rather than a line that says 'proficient in Excel'. Ask your career center about a voucher.
- Tableau Desktop Specialist — Tableau / Salesforce. Paid: Exam ~$100. Tableau is free for students via Tableau for Students. The other half of the BI market. The software itself is free while you are a student.
Questions students ask
Which certification is best for a business analytics internship?
One that makes you build something. A SQL course plus a Tableau or Power BI project usually matters more to recruiters than any single certificate name.
Do I need to learn Python for a business analytics internship?
Not always. Many analyst internships only require SQL and Excel. Python helps for data science-leaning roles, and free courses on Kaggle Learn are a good start.
Is the Google Data Analytics certificate worth it for students?
It is a structured, beginner-friendly program that covers spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau and R, and many students can audit or get financial aid. Its value comes from the case-study project you finish, so make sure you do that part.
