Marketing internships for college students
When marketing recruits
- Sophomore year — Build a portfolio: run social media for a campus group and earn the free HubSpot and Google certificates.
- Junior fall (Sep–Nov) — Large consumer-goods brand management programs and agencies with structured internships recruit early.
- Junior spring (Jan–Apr) — Most agencies, startups and mid-size companies hire — often only weeks before the start date.
- Keep going — Marketing hires later than finance, so keep applying through the spring.
Marketing teams hire interns who can use the tools on day one: analytics, ads platforms, email and social scheduling. The good news is that the companies that make those tools — Google, HubSpot, Meta and others — offer their own training, much of it free. A couple of these certifications show a recruiter you understand how campaigns are measured, not just how they look.
How to choose
- Start with Google Analytics and one free HubSpot certification; both are widely recognized and take a few hours each.
- Pick an ads certification that matches the internship: Google Ads for search and performance roles, Meta for social media roles.
- Pair every certification with a small real project, such as running social media for a club or a local business.
- Keep a simple portfolio of screenshots and results; marketing interviews often ask what you have actually run.

Questions students ask
What certifications should a marketing student get?
Google Analytics and a HubSpot certification are a strong free pair. Add Google Ads or Meta training depending on whether the role is search or social.
Are Google marketing certifications free?
Google's Skillshop certifications for Analytics and Ads are free to take. Longer programs sold through Coursera are paid, though many can be audited.
Do marketing internships care about certifications?
They help, especially for digital roles, but a small campaign you ran with real numbers is usually more convincing. Use certifications to fill skill gaps, then show the work.
