Best certifications for business administration students
The generalist degree: a little of every function, and the tools that let you join any team.
Business Administration internships for college students
When business administration recruits
- Sophomore year — Try a club role in finance, marketing or operations, and look for sophomore programs at large companies.
- Junior fall (Sep–Oct) — Large companies recruit summer interns, including for rotational programs, at fall career fairs.
- Junior spring — Mid-size and local companies hire through the spring.
- Junior summer — The internship. A strong one often turns into a full-time offer.
Business administration is the broadest business major, so a certification’s job is to show employers where you fit. The best ones are free or inexpensive and prove a skill every team uses: Excel, accounting basics, project management, and the sales and marketing platforms companies run on.
How to choose
- Start with Excel; it comes up in interviews for operations, finance and marketing internships alike.
- Add an accounting fundamentals course so you can read the financial statements every department is judged by.
- A free Forage job simulation gives you a real project to talk about when your experience is thin.
- The CAPM is the student-friendly project management credential; it needs no work experience.

Questions students ask
What certifications should a business administration student get?
Excel first, then one that points toward the area you want: a HubSpot certification for marketing or sales, accounting fundamentals for finance, or the CAPM for operations and project work.
Is the CAPM worth it for a business student?
It can be, especially for operations, consulting or project roles. It needs project management education hours but no work experience, which makes it one of the few professional credentials open to students.
Do employers care about free certificates?
They care more about the skill than the certificate. A free certificate helps when you can explain what you learned and show it in an interview or project.
