Retail Management & Merchandising internships for college students
When retail management & merchandising recruits
- Sophomore year — Part-time store or e-commerce work counts; note what you sold, stocked or fixed.
- Junior fall (Aug–Oct) — Large retailers’ buying, merchandising and planning programs recruit early in the fall.
- Junior spring — Store management internships and smaller brands hire for the summer.
- Holiday season (Oct–Dec) — Seasonal store roles add retail experience before your internship.
Retail employers hire for retail math, product sense and leadership on the floor. The NRF Foundation’s RISE Up credentials are the industry’s own and inexpensive. Pair one with Excel, and with an analytics or digital marketing certification if you are interested in e-commerce.
How to choose
- Learn retail math — margin, markup and sell-through — before buying and planning interviews; many include a numbers question.
- NRF’s Retail Industry Fundamentals and Business of Retail credentials cover store operations, pricing and profit, with exams from $40 and $80.
- For e-commerce roles, add Google Analytics and a digital marketing certification.
- Store experience counts: list it with numbers.
