MIS students are valuable because they speak both business and technology. Show that you can do both: a technical skill, and the ability to explain it to people without one.

1. Know when management information systems internships recruit

  1. Sophomore year
Sophomore programs at consulting firms and Big Four technology practices. Earn a cloud or Salesforce credential.
  2. Junior fall (Aug–Oct)
Technology consulting, Big Four risk and technology advisory, and IT rotational programs recruit.
  3. Junior spring
Company IT departments and startups hire on a rolling basis.
  4. Junior summer
The internship; return offers are common in consulting.
Typical timing — employers set their own dates, so check each one.

2. Build the skills employers check

  • SQL
  • Business process mapping
  • Salesforce or SAP basics
  • Cloud fundamentals
  • Excel
  • Explaining technology to business users

3. Take certifications in the right order

None is required, but each shows a skill. Start at the top: the first ones need no background.

  2. AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals — Microsoft. · about 15 hours
  3. SAP Learning journeys — SAP. Free · about 20 hours
  4. Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations — Salesforce. · about 20 hours
  5. PSPO I — Professional Scrum Product Owner — Scrum.org. · about 20 hours
